Ostrava Steel Hawks Sign Defenseman Diego Smith

The Ostrava Steel Hawks have added size, experience, and physicality to their blue line with the signing of Canadian defenseman Diego Smith, a three-year veteran of the Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL).

Originally from Brandon, Manitoba, Smith developed into a dependable two-way defenseman during his junior career, bringing a combination of physical play, defensive reliability, and growing offensive production. Standing 6’0” and shooting right, he adds both structure and edge to the Steel Hawks’ defensive core.

Over three seasons in Revelstoke, Smith steadily progressed each year, appearing in more than 100 career games and producing over 60 points from the back end. He also played a role in multiple playoff runs with one of the KIJHL’s most competitive organizations — a program known for its championship pedigree.

His ability to contribute offensively while maintaining a physical, shutdown presence made him a key piece on the Grizzlies’ roster and a player trusted in important situations.

“After three seasons of Junior A with the Revelstoke Grizzlies KIJHL I’m excited to begin the next chapter of my hockey career with the Ostrava Steel Hawks, studying at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and embracing a new fan base.

I’m an honest player who isn’t afraid to deliver big hits and do whatever it takes to win. I take pride in playing tight defence that creates offensive opportunities for my team. I’m extremely grateful for my three years in Revelstoke and everything the organization has given me.”

Steel Hawks Director of Hockey Operations Zac Pearson believes Smith’s experience in a winning junior environment will translate well to the European game.

“Diego is a player you can rely on in every situation. He competes hard, plays physical, and understands the details of defending at a high level. Coming out of a strong program like Revelstoke, he knows what it takes to win and bring consistency every night. We’re excited about what he adds to our group and his potential moving forward in Europe.”

Smith will join the Steel Hawks for the 2026–27 season, where he will combine hockey with academics at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, continuing his development both on and off the ice.

His signing reflects the Steel Hawks’ commitment to recruiting players with proven junior experience, strong character, and the ability to adapt to the professional-style European game.
